As much as I love cooking and creating recipes, I have to admit that I can be terrible at planning my weeknight meals ahead of time. I’ll often find myself staring down my fridge at the end of a busy day with absolutely no idea beforehand what I’m going to pull together into dinner. Some nights, I come up with something creative; other nights, the nearest takeout menu wins. That established, my interest was piqued when Terra’s Kitchen reached out to me to try their meal delivery service and review it for Striped Spatula readers. I’ve tried a few similar services in the past and have liked the convenience of the concept. When recipes arrive at your door, fully prepped with fresh ingredients and ready to cook, the age old question of “What’s for dinner?” has an immediate answer. On a busy weeknight, this can be worth its weight in gold. With Terra’s Kitchen, I found that the meals landing on my table were not only easy to prepare, but also healthy, with flavor pairings that kept me interested in what would be on the menu next.
What immediately struck me as different about Terra’s Kitchen was their “vessel” delivery concept. Instead of sending a large cardboard shipping box for the recipient to recycle, Terra’s Kitchen sends orders in a cooler-style vessel that they’re able to sanitize and reuse up to 100 times. When I opened it up, I felt like a little refrigerator had arrived at my doorstep, its shelves stocked with all of my pre-prepped ingredients, labeled for each recipe. When fully packed, the vessel was a bit on the heavy side (I’d ordered five meals), but I was able to carry it by its handles to my kitchen. Once I unpacked the vessel, all I had to do was peel off the shipping label to reveal the return info underneath and place it outside my door on the next business day. Terra’s Kitchen had automatically scheduled its pick up, and right on schedule, the vessel left as effortlessly as it arrived.
Ordering from the Terra’s Kitchen website was convenient, with options that were easily sortable by dietary preferences (for example, Paleo, vegetarian, gluten-free, weight loss) and/or protein. For our delivery, I chose Seared Lamb with Chickpea and Cucumber Salad (photographed); Barbacoa Street Tacos; Strawberry-Balsamic Chicken Thighs with Wilted Spinach-Quinoa; Creamy Black Bean Sliders (vegetarian); and Seared Cod with Mustard Caper Sauce and Roasted Cauliflower. I can be a bit of a micromanager when it comes to shopping for ingredients, especially produce. (Read: I’m picky.) That in mind, I have to say that the ingredients that arrived for each meal kit were extremely fresh and of good quality. Each recipe was accompanied by a full-color card with directions that were clear and easy to follow. Most importantly, the recipes worked. In about 30 minutes (except for the slow cooker beef tacos), each of the dinners was on the table, looking very much like the photographs Terra’s Kitchen had provided. In a fun added touch, each recipe card also suggested wine and beer pairings. Talk about doing all of the work for me!
Terra’s Kitchen’s meals are available to order for two or four people via a no-commitment subscription. Like many meal delivery services, weeks can be skipped at your discretion. You have the choice to fill your own vessel, or let Terra’s Kitchen pick for you based on your preferences. Beyond their dinner menu, Terra’s Kitchen offers salad and smoothie add-ons, as well as snacks, juices, and additional proteins. As you fill your vessel online, the website will let you know how much room you have left to add whatever meals or additions you choose. With so many customization options and such a positive experience on my first order, I’ll be very happy to have Terra’s Kitchen do my weeknight meal prep for me again in the future.
