Irish-American Soda Bread

Irish-American Soda Bread is a dense-textured and lightly-sweet loaf, studded with raisins and/or caraway seeds.

Ingredients

all purpose flour granulated sugar and salt baking powder and soda unsalted butter buttermilk egg raisins/currants and/or caraway seeds

Let's Make Irish-American Soda Bread

Start by whisking together the dry ingredients in a large bowl. Cut cold butter cubes into the flour mixture until coarse crumbs form.

Stir in raisins and/or caraway seeds. Pour in beaten egg and buttermilk and stir just until the dough comes together.

Lightly knead and shape the dough into a 6-7 inch round. Transfer to a greased cast iron skillet or lined baking sheet. Cut a cross shape into the top of the round.

Bake at 400F for 40-50 minutes, until golden.  Immediately brush the baked loaf with melted butter. Cool, slice, and serve.
