Creamy, sweet, and tangy—this homemade Honey Mustard Dipping Sauce is miles better than store-bought. Quick to whisk together with everyday ingredients, it’s the perfect condiment for chicken tenders, fries, pretzels, and more.

Before You Start Cooking

  • Plan ahead. The sauce needs at least 4 hours of chilling for the flavors to meld. Make it earlier in the day or the night before you plan to serve.
  • Adjust to taste after chilling, not before. The flavors will both intensify and balance with time, so wait until the sauce has rested before making final adjustments.
  • Honey. Use any honey you love—local or supermarket—but keep in mind that the flavor and intensity can vary. Clover honey will usually add the most mellow, neutral sweetness, while varieties like wildflower will bring a deeper, more complex flavor to the sauce.

How to Make Honey Mustard Dipping Sauce

A glass bowl of mayonnaise and honey is centered, surrounded by smaller bowls of sour cream, yellow mustard, Dijon mustard, brown sugar, lemon juice, garlic powder, and paprika. Step 1: Mix the Sauce

In a medium bowl, whisk together all of the ingredients until the mixture is smooth and creamy. You’ll need:

A good-quality mayonnaise as the base (I use Duke’s) and a little sour cream for extra creaminess and tang. Use a thick brand of sour cream, such as Daisy.

Then come the mustards. Dijon adds depth and a bolder mustard bite, while yellow mustard brightens both the flavor and the color. Start with the smaller amount of Dijon listed in the recipe; you can always add more after chilling if you prefer a stronger kick, since brands vary in intensity.

You’ll need both honey and light brown sugar for sweetness. Using a mix keeps the flavor balanced—too much honey can overpower—and keeps the sauce from thinning out.

A squeeze of fresh lemon juice brings brightness and ties everything together. Adjust to taste depending on how vinegary your mustards are.

Finish with a few pantry staples to round out the flavor: sweet paprika, garlic powder, and freshly ground black pepper. Add a small pinch of salt if needed, though I rarely find it necessary.

Step 2: Chill, Taste, and Adjust

Cover the bowl and refrigerate the sauce for at least 4 hours so the flavors have time to come together.

After chilling, give it a taste and adjust to your liking—maybe a little more Dijon if you prefer a more mustardy flavor, a squeeze of lemon for brightness, or a pinch of brown sugar for extra sweetness.

Keep in mind that adding more honey can thin the sauce, and its flavor tends to intensify the longer the sauce sits—especially if you’re using a bold raw honey. If you want to bump up the sweetness after tasting without overpowering the mustard, add a bit more sugar instead.

After making any adjustments, the chilled sauce is ready to serve, or you can store it for later. It’ll stay fresh in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 5 to 7 days. Don’t freeze it—the texture can become grainy after thawing.

Variations

  • Add Heat: Add a pinch of cayenne pepper, or substitute hot honey for some of the honey quantity.
  • Make it Smoky: Use smoked paprika. You can increase the quantity to taste, up to 1/2 teaspoon total, for a smokier flavor.
  • Grainy Mustard: Use a country-style mustard for up to half the quantity of Dijon for some texture. Country-style mustard (such as Grey Poupon Country Dijon) adds some texture, but not as much coarseness as whole-grain Dijon. My friends and family prefer a smoother Honey Mustard Dipping Sauce.

Honey Mustard Dipping Sauce Serving Ideas

Honey Mustard Sauce is a classic condiment that adds the perfect balance of sweet, tangy, and creamy flavor to everything from chicken and potatoes to sandwiches and game-day snacks.

  1. Chicken: A family favorite with Air Fryer Chicken Tenders, Potato Chip Chicken, and classic chicken nuggets. It’s also great as a drizzle for grilled or baked chicken.
  2. Potatoes: Perfect with French fries, sweet potato fries, or crispy Air Fryer Potato Wedges. It’s also delicious with roasted potatoes or tater tots for an easy appetizer or side.
  3. Game Day: Set out a bowl of honey mustard alongside wings, pretzel bites, onion rings, Pigs in a Blanket, or other fried and air-fried appetizers. The sweet-tangy flavor pairs perfectly with salty, crunchy bites and is always a crowd favorite.
  4. Sandwiches and Sliders: Spread it on your favorite sandwiches and wraps—ham and cheese, turkey, grilled chicken, or club sandwiches. For something different, try it in my Baked Ham and Cheese Sliders instead of the mayo-mustard mix for a hint of sweetness.

Honey Mustard Dipping Sauce

This creamy honey mustard dipping sauce is the perfect balance of sweet, tangy, and smooth. Quick to make with everyday ingredients—great for chicken tenders, fries, sandwiches, or game-day spreads.
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Resting Time: 4 hours
Total Time: 4 hours 10 minutes
Servings: 6 servings (2 tablespoons)

Ingredients

  • 6 tablespoons mayonnaise (I use Duke's)
  • 2 tablespoons sour cream (use a thick brand, like Daisy)
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons Dijon mustard (such as Maille or Grey Poupon)
  • 1 tablespoon American-style yellow mustard (I use French's)
  • 2 tablespoons honey (see note below)
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons light brown sugar , lightly packed
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons freshly-squeezed lemon juice
  • ¼ teaspoon sweet paprika
  • teaspoon garlic powder
  • kosher or fine sea salt and freshly-ground black pepper

Instructions

  • In a medium bowl, whisk all ingredients together until smooth (see note below). Season with a few grinds of black pepper, but hold off on adding salt until after the sauce has chilled.
  • Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 4 hours to let the flavors develop.
  • After chilling, taste and adjust to your liking—adding more Dijon, brown sugar, lemon juice, or a pinch of salt only if needed.
  • Serve chilled. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 5 to 7 days.

Notes

Ingredient quantities: Start with 2 tablespoons of Dijon mustard and 1 teaspoon of lemon juice. The amount of lemon juice you add will depend on the acidity of the mustard brand you’re using.
Similarly, the amount of brown sugar will depend on the sweetness of your honey and your personal preferences. My family likes this sauce with 2 tablespoons brown sugar when using a mild clover honey, but if your honey is particularly sweet—or you like a less sweet sauce—begin with 1 tablespoon and adjust after the sauce has rested.
